One of the most valuable things a parent can do for their children is to teach them the value of money. But don't stop there. They need to know how to use a check book and manage their debt. They need to know how to save for the things they want and how to save for retirement. While an understanding of the value of money is very important, there are other pieces that go along with that knowledge. One example that has taken me a while to learn and truly understand is that who you know may be just as important as what you know. Help your child get to know the right people. If you don't understand money matters as well as you should - who do you know that does? Maybe you do know, but you haven't been able to explain it in a way that is really clear to your child then introduce your child to someone who can. Help your child build a database of people that they know - you never know how these connections will help your child down the road. Here are some quotes about Influence & Association from Jim Rohn. Networking will be the key to your child's future - they should build that network now. Darren Hardy's article about how to gain the power of influence. You might check out Keith Ferrazzi and Lunch for Two. Tim Sanders on Network = Net Worth. If you want to make a difference in financial education for children, I highly recommend that you look into www.jumpstartcoalition.org (in Oregon: www.orjumpstart.org). But most of all, if you have a child you have a responsibility to your child to educate yourself about money so that you can pass it on to him/her and s/he can be smart about his/hers. Below are some links that can help you educate your child. Remember: It's never too late to teach your child about money. Jim Rohn on Children's capacity Teach your children about money (Success Magazine) Article Think of the lack of education you received as a child when it comes to your money. What do you wish you knew then? Teach it to your children TODAY! As a parent it is your job to give your child everything you have and everything you don't have. Help them with their future - and start early! FINANCIAL FITNESS FOR LIFE Kid Links
